Tips About Laser Hair Removal

This is a medical procedure whereby there is use of lasers to remove unwanted hairs. Lasers are intense and pulsating light beams. In the course of the removal, the beams pass through the skin to individual follicles. Intense heat which is produced by the lasers damages the follicles. This will inhibit any future growth. Laser hair removal is most effective in individuals with lighter skins.

The procedure helps in removing unwanted hairs. Common treatment locations include the bikini line, legs and underarm. It is however possible to have unwanted hairs treated in any other areas other than sections adjacent to eyelids. Success of the procedure will be influenced by hair color and type of skin. For instance, it is most effective for people with light skins and hairs that are dark because laser beams target melanin.

With technological advancements, it is possible to successfully treat people with dark skin. However, laser procedures do not guarantee that the hairs will be removed permanently. Some hairs are resistant to lasers and tend to grow again after treatment. The regrowing hairs are finer and lighter. One should expect some side effects following treatment. Skin irritation is one of the common side effects. The irritation involves temporary discomfort, swelling and redness. The effects disappear after some time.

There is the possibility of having pigment changes. The procedure may make areas affected areas light or dark. This happens on a temporary basis. Lightening of the skin affects persons with dark skin, especially so if incorrect laser setting is used. On rare occasions, use of lasers can lead to blistering and scarring. Other types of problems include graying or sections that are untreated and overgrowing of treated hairs.

For people interested in having the procedure, it is important to choose a doctor who is board certified in such a specialty such as cosmetic surgery or dermatology. They should have experience in use of lasers to remove hairs. You should be cautious before doing the procedure at spas, salons or any such facilities. If a licensed nurse is to do the procedure, it should be done under supervision of a doctor.

There are many useful tips when preparing for the procedure. In the first place, you will not be expected to stay around sunlight. Tan will increase side effects of lightening. In case you have tan, you should wait until it fads before treatment. Some doctors will recommend that one keeps off the sun for six or more weeks.

The doctor will advise that one avoids electrolysis, plucking and waxing before treatment. These methods of hair removal disturb hair follicles and as a result interfere with laser functioning. On the other hand, shaving is accepted since it is a preservative of follicles and shafts. Actually, shaving is recommended so that the skin is not affected by lasers.

After treatment is done, you should avoid any exposure to the sun. After the skin has healed, sunscreen should be used whenever the person is exposed to the sun. Some few days following treatment, shedding may occur. This must not be confused with regrowth.
