When Opting For Opiate Addiction Treatment Texas Addicts Opt For A New Life

By Carol Anderson

Many people hold the opinion that substance dependency is a clear sign of weakness and an unwillingness to deal with the day to day problems everyone has to deal with. This is not always the case and regardless of the underlying reasons, substance dependency is already a very real and very big problem. The number of people dependent upon pain killers, specifically, has risen alarmingly. Without opiate addiction treatment Texas addicts have little hope of regaining control over their lives.

Health experts have warned that dependency upon pain killers is fast becoming a very serious problem that can have a devastating effect upon society as a whole. The trend is difficult to stop because purchasing pain killers with a prescription is not illegal. Too many doctors are careless when they issue prescriptions and a thriving black market supply the needs of those addicts that are unable to obtain a prescription.

It is often difficult to spot the signs of dependency on prescription pain killers. Families must become concerned when a loved one buys prescription medication regularly and from different outlets. The same holds true for people that consult different doctors at different times. Addicts are prone to lie and to invent symptoms simply to get the prescription that they so desperately need. They tend to become fidgety and anxious when they run out of medication.

Rehabilitation can never be forced upon an addict. The prior requirement for any successful rehabilitation is an addict that firstly admits that there is a serious problem and secondly expresses a real desire to be helped. Rehabilitation centres will not admit addicts before they have conducted a thorough evaluation to ensure that the chances of success are reasonably favourable. They simply cannot afford to admit addicts that are not likely to benefit from their programs.

Many patients suffer greatly during the first phase of their rehabilitation. They need to be detoxified but this process can cause severe withdrawal symptoms such as depression, pain and even suicidal tendencies. In some cases the patient will be given medication to help ease the withdrawal symptoms but extreme care has to be taken to ensure that the patient does not become dependent upon a new drug.

Simply helping the patient through the withdrawal period is not enough. The patient needs to learn to cope with life without using dangerous drugs. This can be a lengthy process involving many therapy sessions. Patients are also taught how to follow a healthy diet and an exercise regime that will help them lead drug free lives. Experts agree that it is best if the patient remains in an institution during this process.

After completion of a rehabilitation program the patient will be in dire need of constant support. Families should not leave newly recovered addicts alone and they should make it clear that they are there when they are needed. Recovered patients should join support groups and rid themselves of acquaintances and activities that will tempt them back into addiction.

Experts agree that the rising number of people dependent upon pain killers can partly be ascribed to the fact that they are far too easy too obtain. They advocate stricter control over prescription medication and even formal structures for disciplining doctors that provide prescriptions in an irresponsible manner. Only time will tell whether these measure will help.
