When the first Persian invasion of Greece happened, marathon then took its place. This was fought between individuals from Athens and rightly helped out by Plataea and the force from Persia which is commanded by Artaphernes and Datis. The combat was the peak of the first attempt taken up by Persia under King Darius I.
Persian invasion speaks about a lot with the battle. What they have done have certainly brought up people to face the great Battle of Marathon because of how war is immensely coincided within that time. Right on the Ionian revolt which was greatly defeated by the Persian, victory has then taken over and Darius ordered to conquer Greece. He assigned his army together with leaders Datis and Artaphernes to go right across the Aegean so to defeat the Cyclades.
After they defeated the Greeks in Lade, they then traveled and sailed right away to the coast of Attica. But just when they arrived there, the Athenian army immediately marched and obstructed the two exits so to prevent the opponent from entering the island. At such time, the fastest Athenian runner known as Pheidippides was sent to Sparta so to demand for some help yet the Spartan army declined his appeal since they could not march to war until the moon rises fully.
Due to the decline of Spartans, as they are waiting for the moon to grow fuller, the Athenians look up for some help through the Plataea. For five days, both armies are now confronting each other across the plains of Marathon where the flanks of Athenians are protected by groves of trees. Divisions are then settled which makes Miltiades a part of it.
It is still in questions on why the battle occurred even with how the reason of the delay. The Greeks attacked the enemies without waiting for the Spartans to arrive. There are actually two theories linked within such discussion.
For this first theory which is quite believed to be indefinite, specifically to such part where the Greeks took advantage of such attack is because the Persian troop left the field of Marathon without any reason at all. There are actually still more variations of it and these include the most widespread one known as the reembarking of the ships of their enemies towards the sea so to take a hold of their attacks from there.
With the second theory, it simply states that such combat definitely ensued because of how their rivals made the first move. With the attack, what the Athenians did is to purely defend themselves. For some courses, though these two theories are not really taken as exact ones, but it is quite believed that the fight happened because of how the Persian was indulging on an activity which ultimately prompted the war.
Herodotus believed that those Persians definitely obtain a large infantry while he cannot provide the exact figure held by the Athenian force. Yet as for Cornelius Nepos, he estimated that the Persians acquire 10,000 cavalry and 200,000 infantry whereas, the Athenians only obtain 9,000 of men and the Plataeans have only a thousand of them.
Though the Greek only obtains a few men yet they still own the combat. It is believed that even if they have used superior tactics and equipment, they are still ordinary and amateur soldiers who acquire the deepest courage within.
