How To Be More Efficient As A Child Therapist

By Eric Green

Becoming a therapist in this field leads to a lot of responsibilities. Everything you do has a direct effect on the children whom you are working with. So, learn the perfect balance of playing by the rules and being more open to play time. In that situation, it shall not take that long for you to know what really happened to a certain patient.

You must be concerned with how the immediately family is treating the patient. Your role as a child therapist Huntington Beach is not enough for the full recovery of this person. His or her loved ones will need to become equally understanding for the nightmares to be lessened and for them to be encouraged to start going out and socialize once again.

Play with them in different ways to build your trust. Remember that they should see you as an ally and not as the enemy. That is the only way that they can bring you back to what traumatized them. It also pays to be sincere in everything you do. Develop passion in helping these children recover from their troubled past.

Work on making your voice more soothing. Talk in muted tones and do not speak any foul word especially when your patient has grown in an environment that full of that. Make them see that you are their savior and they shall not do anything that can get you out of your calm and consistent mode.

You must put your feet in the shoes of this troubled kid. If they physically resist during the sessions, know that this is just their defense mechanism. They can do better through time and with your consistent guidance. Show to them that there is someone who will not give up on them no matter what happens.

Be sure that you have resolved your childhood issues a long time ago. You can never be a counselor when you look at these children and all you see is yourself. So, undergo personal counseling sessions ahead of time and be a stronger person. Listen to your patients with all the confidence you could muster.

Learn the art of shutting up when they are not in the mood to talk. This is not wasted time since you still have the chance to play and get to know them more. Use those moments to lead them to come to the conclusion that you do not mean any harm in trying to know the truth. You are their friend before your role as a therapist.

Be motivated even when you have the toughest patients to crack. Remember that your goal is not to know their story alone. You need to make them trust in other people again. You may be a stranger but use time as your tool in changing that status. Hang out with the whole family if that is possible.

Have a warm disposition all the time. When you tend to be cheerful, the kids can start seeing brightness in life again. Always act as their role model.
