The Fundaments Of Liquid Filtration In Beaumont TX

By Anthony Edwards

Filtration is one of the physical or mechanical processes used for the separation of fluids and solids. Fluids encompass both liquids and gases. In this process, fluids are allowed to pass through an interposition medium while retaining solids at the same time. The filtered liquid is called a filtrate in chemistry. There is often incomplete separation of the fluids and solids. This is because solids are contaminated while liquids contain small particles of solids that passed through the filter medium.

Certain factors determine how completely the process of separation can be done. Some of those factors are pore size and the filter thickness. Biological processes in sewerage and water treatment applications are also referred to using the term filter. In these applications, the constituents that are not desired are removed through absorption into the biological film that grows in or on the filter medium. Many companies make many different types of equipment and system for liquid filtration in Beaumont TX. The systems can be used for both industrial and residential applications.

Methods of filtration are many and diverse even though they all aim at separating substances. The choice of method to be used depends on where the target material is located. For instance, the material may be in the form of a solid suspension or may be in dissolved form. Another factor that determines the choice of the method to be used is the desired outcome. Three main types are hot, cold, and vacuum filtration.

Hot filtration is used in applications that involve separating hot solutions and solids. Solutions have to be kept hot so as to prevent crystals from forming and sticking on the apparatus. The solution as well as the apparatus used are heated and used while hot. Occurrence of crystallization blocks the funnel preventing the process from continuing.

The cold variety involves quick formation of crystals by having the solution poured on an ice bath. Ice baths help with the fast formation of crystals of small sizes. If the solution is left to cool at room temperature, the crystals formed would have large sizes.

The last variety called the vacuum filtration is preferred in a very specific application. It is used mainly for small batches of solution to dry out tiny crystals fast. The process employs many pieces of equipment including a rubber tubing, Buchner flask, Buchner funnel, and filter paper. The filter paper usually has a smaller diameter compared to the funnel.

Filter media are of two major types, surface and depth filters. Surface filters refer to solid sieves used to trap solids. They may have filter papers or not. Cross-flow filter, rotary vacuum-drum filter, Buchner filter, screen filter, and belt filter are the main examples. Conversely, depth filters come in the form of beds that have granular materials for retaining particles.

Depth filters offer more surface area for trapping particles compared to surface filters. This makes depth filters to be less prone to clogging. Filter media is often cleaned using detergents and solvents. However, in water treatment, swimming pools and similar engineering applications, cleaning is done using backwashing process.
