Health: Staying Sober During Your Party

By Jill Lemons

Sobriety is a difficult stage for any addict to get to. Addicts are often giving a lot of themselves when it comes to drug and alcohol treatment. They often want to express their sobriety with friends and family members that will be proud of them. It is never easy to find sobriety these days. Many men and women find that sober living is a way of life. Most sober living families do not know how to express their sobriety properly. Here are a few tips are how to be sober around your birthday. Many addicts find this hard to do since birthday parties are often mixed with alcohol, music and friends.

If you are planning on throwing a birthday party, make sure to leave alcoholic beverages out. Most people don't realize that your guests can go a few hours without alcoholic beverages. It is important to understand that alcohol often makes your guests feel a little bit "out of it". Try having your guests drink sodas, fruit punches and other drinks that contain no alcohol. On your special day, you want to have very little temptation to drink. Even cases like rum cake can be a disaster for an ex alcoholic.

Most people don't realize that alcohol is a drug. It was once outlawed in the United States and later on became legal. Just because something is legal, doesn't make it okay to use. Even marijuana is being legalized in states like Colorado. Experts say that the smoke inhaled from marijuana is 10 times more lethal than that of nicotine. Most people just hear about the healing effects of marijuana. However, if you really dig deep into the drug, you realize that it actually has lots of bad side effects. The drug even blackens your lungs. It is far worse than cigarette smoke if you research it.

It is important to not look at yourself as everyone else. Others can easily have one drink and put the bottle down. However, you cannot. You will actually end up back in rehab if you choose to drink socially. Unfortunately, addicts have a different brain function. They don't know how to shut off alcohol or drugs. Other people do. Many people that have a food addiction cannot stop eating fattening fast foods and drinks that are loaded with sugar. You have a similar problem, but with alcohol and drugs.

Staying sober simply means that you have an addiction that you must overcome. Overcoming an addiction simply means that you want to walk down a different road. On your birthday, make sure to remind everyone that you are sober. If you have been sober for over a year, tell others about it. The more that your family and friends know about sober living, the better. Most family and friends want to see you living a sober life for more than one reason. They often want to see you feeling free from addiction. Living a sober free life takes time and lots of discipline.
